Water Pressure Drop Testing
Measurement of leakage within water storage reservoirs
When testing for leakage it is often worthwhile to check the water-tightness of any storage reservoir or tank on the pipe system. These will be served by the main water meter of the network and can contribute to leak losses as easily as faulty pipe work.
Where reservoirs are shown to be leaking survey work will usually find the weak spots for further remedial work to arrest the water loss. Water meters can be installed to provide an easy check of inflow versus outflow from the tank to monitor the situation.
For extensive networks drop-testing programmes can be instigated, regularly checking reservoir integrity. Work by Wessex Water concluded that their stock of reservoirs had an average leakage of 0.33% storage capacity per day although it should also be noted that the losses occurred within a few reservoirs (less than 10% of those tested).
