Smart Meters

Smart MeterWhat is a Smart Meter?

'Smart meter' is a generic term used to describe a water meter that can emit an electronic pulse. The pulse is read by a device attached to the meter and then converted into data which can be analysed and displayed as consumption over time.

What are the advantages?

Unlike traditional meters with mechanical dials, smart meters can transmit their data to a receiving device such as a mobile phone or computer. This means that it is possible to gather data from an unlimited number of meters over any geographical distance without physically visiting each one.

How will that save my organisation money?

Because the data arrives on your desktop automatically it removes the time, cost and inconvenience of going round to gather and record the meter readings manually.

The smart meter will alert you by text or email when an abnormal reading occurs, which means that problems are identified when they occur, not when the bill arrives.

Losing water over days, weeks or months can add up to huge volumes of water paid for but not used, so identifying a leak in real time can literally save thousands of pounds.

Once you know your actual consumption you may find that your existing water meter is too large, which means that you can fit a smaller meter without affecting your water supply. This will reduce your standing charge and could save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds each year.

And with all the additional data gathered you are much more likely to start discovering where all your water has been going for all these years.

How much do they cost?

This depends on the size and type of the meter you already have installed and how you want the data to reach you. The first step in the process is to audit the existing water supply infrastructure, identify potential problem areas and then work out the best places to deploy the meters.
