Lead in Water FAQs

Q: I have lead service pipes, how can I reduce the risk from the lead in my drinking water?

A: You should flush the pipes if they have not been in use for a long period of time, for example overnight. By drawing through some fresh water that has not been in contact with your lead service pipe work you will minimise the concentration of lead in the water.

If you have an extensive lead plumbing system only draw drinking and cooking water from your kitchen sink (hot water systems are likely to have higher lead concentrations).

Q: What are the health risks of lead in drinking water?

A: Too much lead in your body can damage the brain, kidneys and nervous system.

The risks are greatest to young children and pregnant women. Growing children absorb lead more rapidly than adults.

Q: Is there much lead in the drinking water supplied by my water company?

A: There is not likely to be any lead in the water supplied by your water company. Much investment has gone into the removal of the lead water mains.

Should any lead water mains still exist constant water sampling and monitoring ensures that the water delivered to your home is wholesome.
